New Construction Final Clean Checklist (Printable)

New Construction Final Clean Checklist (Printable)

A new construction final clean is the last white-glove pass before move-in or handoff. Done right, it follows one rule above all: work top to bottom and save the floors for last, so resettling dust never lands on a surface you've already finished.

Use the checklist below as your master list. It's organized in the exact order a professional crew works, from high dust knock-down through razor-scraping windows, cabinets inside-and-out, fixtures, and floors dead last. Print it, hand it to your crew, or use it to inspect the work before you sign off. Every item uses the `- [ ]` checkbox format so you can tick as you go.

Before You Start: The Golden Rules

  • Top to bottom, always. Ceilings and fans first, floors last.
  • Dry before wet. Vacuum and dust before you introduce moisture.
  • Dust generates, then settles. Do the final clean after the last dust-producing trade leaves.
  • HEPA or bust. Non-HEPA vacuums recirculate fine drywall and silica dust.
  • Two passes minimum. North Texas construction dust resettles for days, plan a second sweep 24–48 hours before move-in.

Whole-Home / High Areas First

  • Knock down dust from ceilings and corners
  • Clean ceiling fans, blades, and light fixtures
  • Wipe HVAC vents, returns, and registers
  • Replace or clean the construction HVAC filter
  • Dust and wipe crown molding and door frames
  • Wipe down all walls where dust or splatter clings
  • Clean baseboards and trim throughout
  • Wipe every door, both faces, plus hinges and handles
  • Clean switch plates, outlets, and thermostats

Windows, Glass, and Razor Work

New glass is almost always marked with paint specks, stucco splatter, adhesive, and stickers. This is skilled, careful work.

  • Peel all manufacturer stickers and labels from glass
  • Razor-scrape paint, caulk, and stucco off panes (with care to avoid tempered-glass scratching)
  • Clean interior glass streak-free
  • Clean exterior glass where reachable
  • Vacuum and wipe window tracks and sills
  • Clean mirrors and any glass doors
  • Wipe window frames and hardware

Kitchen

  • Vacuum inside every cabinet and drawer, then wipe clean
  • Wipe cabinet exteriors, doors, and handles
  • Remove protective film from appliances
  • Clean inside and outside of oven, microwave, and dishwasher
  • Clean refrigerator interior and exterior
  • Degrease and polish the range and vent hood
  • Clean and sanitize countertops and backsplash
  • Remove grout haze from new tile backsplash
  • Clean and shine the sink and polish the faucet
  • Wipe the toe-kick and under-cabinet lighting

Bathrooms

  • Vacuum and wipe inside all vanity cabinets and drawers
  • Wipe vanity exteriors and hardware
  • Clean and sanitize toilet, inside and out
  • Scrub tub and shower; remove any grout haze
  • Clean glass shower doors (scrape any residue)
  • Polish faucets, handles, and towel bars
  • Clean mirrors streak-free
  • Clean and shine sinks and countertops
  • Wipe exhaust fan covers

Bedrooms, Living Areas, and Closets

  • Wipe closet shelving, rods, and built-ins inside and out
  • Clean any built-in cabinetry and shelving
  • Wipe windowsills and clean glass (see window section)
  • Clean baseboards and trim
  • Dust and wipe any wall-mounted fixtures

Laundry and Utility

  • Wipe inside and outside of cabinets
  • Clean utility sink and faucet
  • Wipe washer/dryer hookups and surrounding surfaces
  • Clean water heater closet and HVAC closet surfaces

Floors, Absolutely Last

  • HEPA-vacuum all carpet thoroughly
  • Sweep or vacuum all hard floors
  • Remove grout haze from new tile
  • Mop hard floors with the correct cleaner for the material
  • Spot-clean any paint, caulk, or adhesive on floors
  • Peel protective film from hardwood or LVP

Final Inspection Walk-Through

  • Re-check windowsills and tracks for resettled dust
  • Look across glass at an angle for missed specks
  • Open every cabinet and drawer to confirm interiors are clean
  • Check high corners and fan blades under raking light
  • Confirm no film or haze remains on floors
  • Take out all trash and debris

How Long This Takes

The full list is a lot of surface area. Here's a realistic guide for the final pass on a clean-behind build.

Home sizeSolo DIY2–3 person crew
Under 1,500 sq ft1–2 days4–6 hours
1,500–2,500 sq ft2–3 days6–9 hours
2,500–4,000 sq ft3–4+ days1–2 days

Remember to plan a second pass 24–48 hours before move-in to catch dust that resettled after the first clean, this is normal for the fine clay and drywall dust common across the US-75 corridor.
